PROJECT: Fairview Ridges Cath Lab CLIENT: Fairview Health Services ARCHITECT: BWBR Architects DESCRIPTION: A 2,000 SF Existing Facility Renovation
The scope of this project involved the construction of two new operating suites in the Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, MN, including capabilities for Cardiac Catheterization. These suites were constructed in shell space that had been improved to accommodate sterile storage of surgical aids and equipment.
The demolition and construction operations were carried out as surgical procedures were being performed in the immediately adjacent ORs. In addition, the expected infection control measures, transmission of sound and vibration were of particular concern. Construction activities were carefully scheduled around the surgical schedule, to avoid disruptions in patient care.
The imaging function of these suites required complete radiation shielding including protection of the control area, and installation of lead-lined vision control glazing at the surgeon scrub sinks. Structurally, the ceiling mounted equipment booms and C-arm imaging cradle required significant overhead support.
In addition to the challenge of working in critical patient care areas, there were schedule restraints that required both suites to be ready for equipment installation 11 weeks from date of award. Critical items were expedited, and additional shifts were authorized to compress the duration, resulting in the successful addition of vital Cardiac Care to another Fairview Hospital.
